Announcing Winner of Hip Hop Science Spaza 2015 Competition

BoomScienceKids2015.jpgCongratulations to the 2015 Hip Hop Science Spaza Competition winners!

They are the BOOM Science Kids, from Lungisa Senior Secondary School, Eastern Cape. Their song ‘The Universe’ was selected by the Science Spaza team and will be professionally recorded in 2016!

The theme for 2015’s Hip Hop Science Spaza was “The international year of light and light based technologies”. The contestants had to create a hip hop song using four scientific facts on this topic. The BOOM Science Kids delivered a fun and funky song which captures the essence of what the universe is and how it flows like the rhythm of hip hop.

“The universe, the galaxy, the solar system with all the lower systems, they all happen in time and they all have rhyme…”

To listen to the full song and to sing along, keep an eye on our Facebook page for the announcement of when The BOOM Science Kids have finished recording and you’ll find it on the Science Spaza Soundcloud page (www.Soundcloud.com/ScienceSpaza). 30th May 2015 at Olwazini Discovery Centre

Three Science Spaza Clubs from uMgungundlovu District Municipality are becoming experts in water and health by participating in a research literacy project, Hip Hop Health: Research, Rhythm and Rhyme for Healthy Communities, supported by The Wellcome Trust.

Sixty members from Science Spaza Clubs at Sobantu Secondary School, Mehlokazulu Senior Secondary School and Emzamweni High school have begun working closely with experts in health research and water to identify water-related diseases in their respective communities. The clubs will run research projects to learn more about these issues and their findings will be turned into rap songs which they'll perform for their local communities and have recorded on a CD.

The CD and research activities will be shared with all the Science Spaza Clubs in South Africa in 2016.

Hip Hop Science Spaza and iFani do it AGAIN for National Science Week 2015!

We were so amped for National Science Week (1-8 August 2015)! Science Spaza partnered with the Department of Science and Technology and SABC’s Hectic Nine-9 to bring you enlightening Hip Hop songs from iFani and Edendale Technical High School in celebration of the International Year of Light.

We explored the exciting science around light and how it affects our daily lives, through Reflection, Refraction and Scattering of light. Dr Sandile Ngcobo from CSIR spoke to us about lasers and Mr Siphesihle Makhathini from SKA spoke about the Square Kilometre Array and the galaxies it explores. Lungelo, an awesome beat-boxer from Pietermaritzburg, did wonders with his mouth - he sounds like a 4-piece percussion band!

Community radio stations featured our interviews with local artists about their specific interest in Science and Hip Hop - write to us if you heard them!!
